The 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah The Holiest Days of the Year
✦
A complete guide — authentic Quranic verses, prophetic hadiths, a day-by-day breakdown, and a daily ibadah checklist for every Muslim.
Why These Days Are Unlike Any Other
When Allah ﷻ swears by something in the Quran, He is drawing our attention to its immense magnitude. He does not swear by trivial things. The great Quranic commentator Ibn Kathir confirmed that the “ten nights” in Surah Al-Fajr refer to the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah — and this is the most well-accepted interpretation among scholars across all four schools of thought.
These days gather together the five pillars of worship — prayer, fasting, charity, dhikr, and sacrifice — in a single window. No other period in the Islamic year does this. As Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani explained, this unique combination is precisely why these days surpass all others.
A Guide to All Ten Days
Here is what each day holds — and exactly how to spend it.
Begin with sincere repentance and a firm niyyah to fill all ten days with worship. Write a personal ibadah plan: how many pages of Quran each day, when you will fast, how much sadaqah you will give. The Prophet ﷺ said deeds are judged by their intentions — so start here, with clarity and sincerity.
These are the heart of the ten days. The Prophet ﷺ used to fast all nine days before Eid. Fast as many as you can — each sincere fast shields your face from the Fire for a journey of seventy years (Bukhari). Give sadaqah without exception every single day. Increase Quran recitation. Pray Tahajjud each night. Fill every spare moment with Takbeer, Tahmeed, and Tahleel.
The pilgrims leave Makkah for Mina, entering ihram and beginning the sacred rites of Hajj. For those at home, intensify your worship and make long dua specifically for all the hujjaj. Spiritually accompany them. Arrange your Qurbani today if you have not already done so.
The single most powerful day of the year for non-pilgrims. On this day the verse was revealed: “This day I have perfected for you your religion” (Quran 5:3). Allah frees more people from the Fire on Arafah than any other day. Fasting expiates two years of minor sins. Spend the entire day fasting, making dua, reciting Quran, and doing dhikr from Fajr to Maghrib.
Begin with ghusl, dress your best, recite the Takbeer on the way to Eid Salah. Pray the Eid prayer and listen to the khutbah. Perform Qurbani in obedience to Allah ﷻ, following the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim ؑ. Distribute the meat in three equal parts: family, friends and neighbours, and the poor and needy.
The Day of Arafah
يَوْمُ عَرَفَةThere is no day on which Allah frees more servants from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. The pilgrims stand in a sea of white on the plains of Arafah — but every Muslim, wherever they are on earth, can access the boundless mercy of this extraordinary day.
The single most important action for non-pilgrims: fast. One fast on this day erases the minor sins of two full years. Spend the day in sustained worship — dua, Quran, istighfar, and dhikr. Do not let this day pass in heedlessness.
Seven Best Deeds for the Ten Days
Every good deed is multiplied in reward during these days. These are the seven most important ones to prioritise.
The Prophet ﷺ used to fast the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah. Try to fast as many as possible. At minimum, fast Day 9 — the Day of Arafah — which alone expiates two years of minor sins. Each sincere voluntary fast shields one from the Fire for a journey of seventy years (Bukhari).
Allah Himself commands His remembrance during these days. Recite the Takbeer abundantly. The Sahaba would go to the marketplace and recite it aloud — people hearing them would join in. Let every spare moment — commuting, cooking, walking — be filled with His name.
Set a daily Quran goal for the full ten days and hold yourself to it. Even a single page read with focus and reflection carries enormous weight in these blessed days. Every letter brings ten hasanaat — multiplied further during Dhul Hijjah. Try for consistency over quantity.
Give charity without exception, every day of the ten. Even a small, consistent amount is beloved to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said the most beloved deeds are those done consistently, even if they are small. Sponsor an orphan, feed the hungry, donate to a trustworthy cause — no amount is too little.
For those who are financially able, performing Qurbani on Day 10 is a great act of worship and a Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim ؑ. The blood of your sacrifice reaches Allah before it touches the ground. It is a tangible expression of obedience, gratitude, and generosity — share the meat widely.
These days are an open door. No matter how far you feel, Allah is Al-Ghaffar — the Ever-Forgiving. Make tawbah with complete sincerity: stop the sin, feel genuine remorse, resolve not to return to it. This is the single most important spiritual reset you can make this season.
Silat al-rahm — upholding the ties of kinship — is specifically highlighted as a virtuous deed in these days. Call your parents. Visit relatives you have neglected. Resolve any disputes. Good character and genuine kindness toward family weigh heavily in these blessed days.
اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ
Allahu Akbar, wa Lillaahil Hamd
Allah is the Greatest and to Allah belongs all praise.”
Your Daily Ibadah Checklist
Print this and tick it off each day of the ten. Consistency is key — the Prophet ﷺ said the most beloved deeds are those done regularly, even when small.
The ten days of Dhul Hijjah come and go in the blink of an eye. But the seeds planted in these ten days — prayers answered, sins forgiven, deeds multiplied — can reshape the rest of your year, and your life.
These days are proof that Allah ﷻ wants to forgive us, wants to elevate us, and gives us every opportunity to return to Him. Do not let them pass in heedlessness.
اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا — آمِيْن يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِيْن “O Allah, accept from us.” — Ameen, O Lord of all the worlds.
